INDIA’S BEST DESIGN PROJECT 2020

Pyramis and Perla are unique products that create far-reaching social impact, commit to the use of recycled materials and are low in their carbon footprint. This wider context of Pyramis and Perla is the driver and inspiration behind them, made possible through the creative collaboration with Toucan Krafte. Starting as an exploratory exchange, the collaboration has developed to be a long-term engagement to generate new audiences for hand crafted textile innovations, elevating an experience of textile.

Traditionally small textile crafting is carried out by women, who work in small production clusters in their local area near to their home. Toucan Krafte has used this cluster model to create viable training and sustainable employment for hundreds of urban women. Small-scale elements, lightweight materials and local working are all factors that help work fit in with womenʼs parenting commitments. This traditional manner of working has brought communities together for many generations with positive effects passing from generation to generation.

The textile innovations, originating from traditional textile crafts, can be understood as new crafts - creating their own aesthetic and visual identity using the foundations of Indian textile. Each technique an element innovated by Toucan Krafte.

Alongside the social impact of the innovations and the collaboration nurture concepts that are true to the ethical luxury movement and the wider values of Loco Design. Innovating across a breadth of material disciplines with authenticity and commitment - from the technical rigours of materials such carbon fibre, to working with crafted hand textiles with sensitivity, the approach combines a traditional crafting expertise with continual evolution of technically advanced processes.
